Bonald’s maxim on debate

You’re only as smart as you think your opponent is.

  1. This holds true in chess too. My game gets much worse when I play several games against my friend who is a weak player. I make all kinds of unsound moves that I end up getting away with. Then when I go to play my friend who is near-Master level, I’m in the habit of making poor moves and he blows me out of the water.

I’m capable of sound play at a pretty high level. But knowing I’m playing a bad player makes me play poorly too.
